Essential oils from two Eucalyptus from Tunisia and their insecticidal action on Orgyia trigotephras (Lepidotera, Lymantriidae) Biol. Res.
Slimane,Badreddine Ben; Ezzine,Olfa; Dhahri,Samir; Jamaa,Mohamed Lahbib Ben.
BACKGROUND: Essential oils extracted from aromatic and medicinal plants have many biological properties and are therefore an alternative to the use of synthetic products. The chemical composition of essential oils from two medicinal plants (Eucalyptus globulus and E. lehmannii) was determined and, their insecticidal effects on the third and fourth larval stages of Orgyia trigotephras were assessed. RESULTS: Larvae were collected from Jebel Abderrahmane (North-East of Tunisia), conserved in groups of 50/box (21 × 10 × 10 cm) at a temperature of 25°C. Larvae were tested for larvicidal activities of essential oils. Each oil was diluted in ethanol (96%) to prepare 3 test solutions (S1 = 0.05%, S2 = 0.10% and S3 = 0.50%). Essential oils were used for contact,...

The coastline extended between Manzanillo city and the mouth of Cauto River is a widely man-modified region by the urban-industrial-fishing activities. The present study in shows the results obtained in this zone on summer 2002, May and November 2007 and November 2008. Conditions of sediments and tenors was analyzes, starting from the effects of insecticide and other contaminant compounds, either of organic or inorganic nature, and also exposes the decreasing tendency in the production of species of economic interest, like the blank shrimp (Litopenaeus schmitti), pink shrimp (Farfantepenaeus notialis) and oyster (Cras sostrea rhizophorae). The negative relationship between the shrimp’s capture and water dam volumes was demonstrated and explained, with 0.81...

Grain yield and termite damage in rice by compaction on the furrow and seed treatment PAB
Pinheiro,Veneraldo; Stone,Luís Fernando; Barrigossi,José Alexandre Freitas; Nascente,Adriano Stephan.
Abstract The objective of this work was to determine the effects of soil compaction pressure on the sowing furrow and of seed treatments with insecticides on grain yield and on termite damage in upland rice plants under no-tillage, in the Center West region of Brazil. Three experiments were carried out, consisting of five seed treatments combined with three (first experiment) or four (second and third experiments) compaction pressures in a randomized complete block design, in a factorial arrangement. The seed treatments were: T0, without treatment; T1, imidacloprid+thiodicarb; T2, thiamethoxam; T3, carbofuran; and T4, fipronil+pyraclostrobin+thiophanate-methyl. The compaction pressures applied were: 25, 42, and 268 kPa, in the first experiment; and these...

Hazards in non-pasteurized milk on retail sale in Brazil: prevalence of Salmonella spp, Listeria monocytogenes and chemical residues BJM
Nero,Luís Augusto; Mattos,Marcos Rodrigues de; Beloti,Vanerli; Barros,Marcia A.F.; Netto,Daisy Pontes; Pinto,José Paes A.N.; Andrade,Nélio José de; Silva,Wladimir P.; Franco,Bernadette D.G.M..
Fluctuations in the Brazilian milk market force small milk producers to find temporary trade alternatives, which include selling raw milk to people who prefer this type of milk rather than heat-processed milk. Considering the importance of these small milk producers to the market and the well-known health risks associated to consumption of raw milk, this study evaluated the microbiological quality and the presence of Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella spp., chlorine, antimicrobials and insecticides (organophosphates and carbamates) in raw milk produced in 210 small and medium farms located in four important milk-producing Brazilian states (Paraná, São Paulo, Minas Gerais and Rio Grande do Sul). In 66% of the selected farms the milking was manual. In 33% of...

Histopathological Alterations in Common Carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) Gills Caused by Thiamethoxam BABT
Georgieva,Elenka; Stoyanova,Stela; Velcheva,Iliana; Yancheva,Vesela.
This work aimed to study the effect of new neonicotinoid thiamethoxam on the histological structure of common carp (Cyprinus carpio, L.) gills. Three experimental groups of fish were treated with 6.6, 10 and 20 mg/l thiamethoxam in laboratory conditions. Results showed different histological changes in the gill epithelium, which included lamellar lifting, edema, proliferation of the glandular cells and epithelium, covering the gill filament, fusion and degenerative alterations. The blood circulatory system showed mainly vasodilatation. All thiamethoxam concentrations activated compensatory-adaptive mechanisms, which caused pathological changes in the gills. Moreover, there was a tendency towards the enhancement of the gill histological changes, whose...

Insecticide Use and Crop Selection: A South Dakota Case Study AgEcon
McDonald, Tia Michelle; Keating, Ariel Ruth; Fausti, Scott W.; Li, Jing; Lundgren, Jonathan G.; Catangui, Mike.
South Dakota has recently experienced a significant increase in the proportion of acres treated with insecticide. Unfortunately, data on insecticide usage by crop at the county level is not available. The following case study seeks to uncover the reasons for this increase by analyzing county-level data in South Dakota with a fixed effects panel regression. The study links the proportion of acres planted for a specific crop to the proportion of total acres treated with insecticide. This approach provides insight on how changing cropping patterns in South Dakota have influenced insecticide use.

Insects associated with tropical foliage produced in the coffee growing region of Colombia Rev. Bras. entomol.
Aristizábal,Luis F.; Cardona,Leidy V.; Henao,Efrain R.; Salgado,Misael; Arthurs,Steven P..
We conducted a survey of insects and pest management practices on 34 farms growing ornamental tropical foliage plants in the central coffee region of Colombia over two years. Tropical foliage provided habitat for a diverse range of insects. In total, phytophagous or detritivorous insects from six orders, 40 families and 62 genera were collected. The most common were Hemiptera (29 genera from 16 families), followed by Coleoptera (17 genera from 4 families), Diptera (5 genera from 5 families), Lepidoptera (5 genera from 4 families), Hymenoptera (3 genera from 2 families) and Orthoptera (2 genera from 2 families). The most common phytophagous species were leaf cutting ants (Atta and Acromyrmex spp.), leaf beetles (Chrysomelidae), leafhoppers (Cicadellidae),...

Mathematical modelling of vector-borne diseases and insecticide resistance evolution J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Kuniyoshi,Maria Laura Gabriel; Santos,Fernando Luiz Pio dos.
Abstract Background: Vector-borne diseases are important public health issues and, consequently, in silico models that simulate them can be useful. The susceptible-infected-recovered (SIR) model simulates the population dynamics of an epidemic and can be easily adapted to vector-borne diseases, whereas the Hardy-Weinberg model simulates allele frequencies and can be used to study insecticide resistance evolution. The aim of the present study is to develop a coupled system that unifies both models, therefore enabling the analysis of the effects of vector population genetics on the population dynamics of an epidemic. Methods: Our model consists of an ordinary differential equation system. We considered the populations of susceptible, infected and recovered...
